A schizophrenic man, Peter, travels through three mental institutions and their peculiar inmates. Each institution purportedly serves a purpose in his treatment, i.e. formal incarceration; the treatment and eradication of his hallucinations; and finally his stay in a holding facility, before releasing him back into the “normal” world. Fred da Silva is his constant companion on this journey. A woman, Baby, accompanies Fred da Silva on his visits to Peter. She seems in love with both men. The psychiatrist in the story, Henrico, intends to rid Peter of his two friends. He succeeds, until Peter lands in the holding facility, joins two very virulent schizophrenics there, and he himself falls to pieces again.

Excerpt:

I follow him. We walk to the pedestrian bridge over the railway line. In the middle of the bridge he stops and so do I. I watch him. I stand still but he walks to the cement railing and leans over it. The railway line glints in the sun and the ballast stones strewn along it are a rich brown color. I watch him. He swings one leg over the railing and then the other. He sits there with his feet dangling in the air. He looks at me and runs a hand through his hair.

“Come, sit here next to me,” he says.

I walk over to the railing and look down. I am scared and I waver.
